Happy New Year!

"I pray my wish
will come true
For my child
and your child too
He'll see the day of glory
See the day
when men of good will
Live in peace,
live in peace again"
(Lyrics from Dani's favourite piece of Christmas music, "Peace On Earth - Little Drummer Boy.")

Wishing you and yours all the very best in 2008!

Advice to parents of 3 year olds

The quote below is taken from Ask Moxie's book review of Your Three-Year-Old: Friend or Enemy by Louise Bates Ames, PhD and Frances L. Ilg, MD.

I love her favourite quote from the book which apparently "comes from the section talking about how a three-year-old can be completely adversarial with the mother, because the mother is the one the child is most emotionally engaged with:"

"Recognizing this fact, you will if at all possible enlist the services of a good baby-sitter for as much of the time as possible...This advice may seem like the all-time cop-out. It remains our best advice."

When phones were phones

I'd really appreciate it if anyone out there could recommend some software for the Telus LG-490 that would let me back-up (and edit) my phone book and memopad onto my computer!

(LG-490 trivia: the "zoom" function on the camera isn't available if you're at 640x480 resolution.)

Whatever you do ...

Blink from Dr. Who Season 3 has got to be one of the finest one hour stories I've ever seen -- by any series. Original concepts. Excellent execution. Not in the least bit predictable.

"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink."

"Good Luck."

Happy (and unhappy) numbers

While watching the Dr. Who episode from season 3 titled "42" last night, David Tennant rattled off:

"Any number that reduces to one when you take the sum of the square of its digits, reduce it and continue iterating until it yields 1, is a happy number. Any number that doesn't, isn't. A happy prime is both happy and prime"

As I've never taken a recreational mathematics course, in my mind's eye all I saw was this:

Short term goals are important

I first heard the idea that (parents) should "aim for better, not for perfect" on an episode of CityLine which had Joe Rich of "Parenting -- The Long Journey."

I think it's a terrific adage -- unless of course, you're my neurosurgeon. Then, by all means, aim for perfect!

That's a big ...

I remember seeing an Animation Fesitval in the early 90's that had a short film with a gag similar to this in it. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the animated short. If it comes to me, I'll be sure to put the appropriate credit for the inspiration here! (But that's a big IF!)
